Jonathan Savar is the founding partner of The Savar Law Firm. His practice focuses on representing startups, small businesses, emerging growth companies, venture capital investors, lenders, founders and consultants on business formation and strategy; commercial agreements, documents and policies; venture capital and angel/seed investments; mergers and acquisitions; joint ventures and other strategic transactions; loan agreements and other debt financings; corporate governance, compliance and board matters; licensing and other technology transactions; employment, compensation and benefits; privacy, cybersecurity, data protection, compliance and AI governance; commercial leasing; franchising; and other commercial matters. Mr. Savar also regularly serves as outside general counsel to his clients, and represents boards, C-level executives and management on critical governance matters as well as other important legal and business issues.
Legal Experience
In-House Experience
As deputy general counsel and the chief transactions and financings attorney of a fintech in the insurance sector, Mr. Savar led the legal team in the company’s successful upsized IPO and concurrent private placements (total deal size: $1.2 billion) as well as its restructuring and expansion of its debt facilities.
Investment Banking Experience
Also prior to founding The Savar Law Firm, Mr. Savar worked for many years as an investment banker at two international financial institutions arranging many billions of dollars of tax-advantaged leveraged leases (some of which won “deal of the year” awards from industry publications) of “big ticket” infrastructure, equipment and vehicles for corporate investors, financial institutions, government agencies and corporations.
Affiliations
Mr. Savar is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA), where he is also a member of several committees including the Business Law Section. Mr. Savar is also a member of the New York City Bar Association (NYCBA) and of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), and is AI governance trained through the IAPP. Additionally, Mr. Savar is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). Mr. Savar is also currently working on an AI legal reasoning project with The Atticus Project.
Education
Mr. Savar graduated from Princeton University and The University of Chicago Law School, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of The University of Chicago Legal Forum (Volume 1995) (advised by now Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan).
